Kem Martinez is a retired instrumental music educator and a proud alumna of San Francisco State University. Mrs. Martinez served with distinction in the Jefferson School District for 34 years at Fernando Rivera Intermediate School. During Mrs. Martinez's tenure in the JSD (Daly City), her concert bands and jazz bands were awarded many Superior and Command Performance ratings at California Music Educator Association festivals.
Mrs. Martinez was recognized by her peers by being presented with the following: PTSA Service and Continuing Service Award; 1982 JSD "Teacher of the Year"; 2000-2001 CMEA Bay Section "Educator of the Year"; 2006 CMEA Presidents Award and CMEA Hall of Fame (2009). Kem was also nominated for "Who's Who" twice.
Mrs. Martinez was active with CMEA serving as Area VI representative, Band Manager and Assistant Band Manager of the annual Conference Junior High Band. Kem also served, with her husband Jim, as Festival coordinator for many years.
Mrs. Martinez was invited to conduct three honor bands: 1993 CMEA Conference Band, 1994 North Bay JHS Honor Band (Vacaville), and the 1994 Marin County JHS Honor Band.
Born in Texas of musical parents, Kem was raised in Monterey and graduated from Monterey High School. She then graduated Monterey Peninsula College with an AA degree. As a music scholarship recipient, Mrs. Martinez transferred to SFSU where she performed in many ensembles including Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Choral Union, Composer's Workshop, and in the Opera Orchestra.
Mrs. Martinez, a flute and piccolo player, was a student of Paul Renzi and Ray Fabrizo. After graduating from SFSU she performed in many ensembles including , Music from Bear Valley, Monterey County Symphony, Cañada Orchestra, Ohlone Wind Ensemble and Foothill College Band. She currently plays with the CSM Symphonic Band and Chabot Wind Ensemble.
Mrs. Martinez is very pleased to be a part of the SFWE organization.
